Become an Operational Volunteer
The Vienna Volunteer Fire Department is part of what is called a "combined system". While all of the 35
fire stations within Fairfax County are staffed around the clock by career Fairfax Fire and Rescue
personnel, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue relies on the use of volunteer firefighters. There are
12 volunteer fire stations spread throughout Fairfax County, utilizing the services of more than 350 operational
volunteers.
Volunteers can choose two paths: EMS only or Firefighter/EMT. Details for each can be found by using the menu on the left.
Volunteer firefighters and EMTs are used in various capacities within the county's fire service. They supplement
staffing, adding personnel to units already in service and provide emergency staffing for special events
such as Fairfax Fair, Viva Vienna and the Bull Run Jamboree. Volunteers also place units in service to cover for peak
call periods such as during storms or major incidents requiring a multitude of fire department resources.
Requirements
- Minimum age is 16 years (18 for firefighter)
- Must pass Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department physical
- Attend all regular departmental meetings
- Work assigned Bingo night (currently averaging once every six weeks)
- Must volunteer 20 hours per month
- Must complete 48 hours of training each year
Operational members who perform 240 hours of annual service are entitled to claim a personal property tax exemption on one (1) vehicle.
