This engine is staffed by 4 qualified volunteer firefighters/EMTs of which one must be an engine driver and one must be a certified volunteer lieutenant or command officer. When not backfilling at another station in Fairfax county for training drills or large scale/extended incidents, this unit is staffed to provide additional coverage for the Vienna area. When available, a volunteer paramedic allows E402B to provide the same level of advanced life support medical care that a medic unit can, with the exception of transport.
This unit also serves as a “ready reserve” engine for continued operations when E402 is out of service for mechanical reasons.
