The Vienna Volunteer Fire Department's 2024 Holiday Ornament is our logo surrounded by a traditional firefighter Maltese Cross - to honor the career and volunteer members of the fire service that protect the Town of Vienna.
Logo
Our current logo has been in use in some for since at least the mid 1930's. The circular cascading 'VVFD' is a timeless design. The simple circle and recognizable letters has been used on our apparatus doors since the 1930's. While the same design, the colors were a originally a blue background providing a bit of a 'pop' against the traditional fire engine red. Over time, our logo has evolved to include additional embellishments, but always centered around this circular design.
The logo as depicted on this ornament was created by graphic designer and VVFD member Monica Haley in 2016. VVFD decided to modernize our logo by returning to the simple yet elegant circle in a standard VVFD color while adding '1903' and 'Vienna'.
Maltese Cross
The VVFD logo is surrounded by a traditional firefighter symbol which is a variant of the Maltese Cross. The original Maltese Cross is a white eight-pointed cross used by the Order of St John of Jerusalem as early as the year 1080, eventually making their way to the Island of Malta. During the Crusades, these knights became fire fighters because their enemies resorted to glass bombs containing naphtha and other flaming oils. Many of these knights were answered the call to serve and recruited their fellow knights to extinguish the fires, protecting life and property. As a celebration of these brave acts, the original Maltese Cross worn by these knights was decorated and escribed, becoming an honor to the bearer of this new symbol.

This beautiful ornament is made in the USA by Beacon Design, the same company behind the annual White House ornament.
