Celebrating VVFD's First Fire Station
The Vienna Volunteer Fire Department's 2023 Holiday Ornament honors the Town of Vienna's early history by featuring its first station and two of its earliest vehicles -- a 1919 Ford (left) and a 1924 Chevrolet (right).
VVFD was formed in 1903 with every able-bodied man and boy decreed to be a member of the department by first Fire Chief Leon Freeman. However it wasn't until 1929 that VVFD built its first dedicated fire station on Church Street. Until that time, apparatus were stored in various locations, including under Chief Freeman's porch (now the Freeman House on Church Street). In the 1920s, 2462 sq ft of land was donated at 113 Church Street NW by local resident Seth Gorman for a new station. With the help of volunteers, local builder George Darne Sr. donated his expertise to construct a 2-bay building with a large underground cistern that provided water for fighting fires. VVFD expanded the building twice to add 3 more apparatus bays to account for the fire suppression needs of the quickly growing Vienna population, especially post WWII. After moving into the current station location at 400 Center Street S, the Church Street station was sold to resident Laurette Hipple who opened Worthington's Cards and Gifts, a beloved Vienna Institution until closing its doors in 2003 making way for the modern development you now see on Church Street.
Early VVFD apparatus were beautiful. Among the many early vehicles, two in particular are depicted in this 2023 ornament.
